Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. M.I.A. was illustrating her line, acting out the attitude of the words: performing. Fine, it may not be legal to flip the bird on television, but that’s simply a remnant of the fifties we haven’t shaken. Unless somebody was handing out Xanax with the foam fingers, Lucas Oil Stadium was ringing with the music of profanities last night. More to the point, television viewers were submitted to ad after ad that likened women—negatively—to sofas, cars, and candy. Mr. Winter didn’t have anything to say about that, so I’d like to raise both of my middle fingers to him and anyone who thinks profanity is somehow more harmful to our children than images of violence and misogyny. (My two sons, fourteen and eleven, thought the Fiat ad was corny, so I guess they will be safe without Mr. Winter’s intervention.) I say we get out of The Pretending To Be Moral game altogether and use the Internet for important things like posting pictures of cats looking at croissants and PDFs of sensitive government documents.”

-
M.I.A.
tapizdevida:

Being White

I’m very hesitant to publish this. I’m uncomfortable writing it.

A few nights ago, a friend of mine and I were talking about gender roles. Long story short, she said, “the further removed from a straight, Christian, white male, the harder your life is.”

For the…

too longwinded to post so you’ll have to click above to see the rest, this shit is all racist had a nice but well formulated response. I just wanted to say that it always amazes me when people think white privilege translates to “POC mistakenly assuming they [white person] have always had a great life” and “POC always have shitty lives in which they constantly suffer.” Neither are true- there is not one person on earth who has not experienced some truly shitty stuff. I don’t even have to conduct a poll to figure that out- it’s common sense. But beyond our individual sufferings- however dire some are (or are not)- privilege still exists!

And no one pointing out privilege or examining it or discussing it or simply mentioning it in context is trying to say that everyone who is white has had an easy-peasy life with no challenges or hurtles. To act as if that is the core of privilege discussion really undervalues and undermines a lot of the incredibly insightful, powerful work people have done in examining/exposing/challenging/deconstructing it, and ignores all the (plentiful) proof that shows it exists beyond a doubt (and the ways in which it operates in many facets of our lives).

And, I realize OP wasn’t being a super racist poopwad or anything but it just… really bothers me how this comes up again and again and again and it seems like so many people just aren’t listening when it comes to an explanation of how privilege operates. If you read a lot/learn about/are told about structural racism and white privilege and the main point you come away with from all that is that POC are misrepresenting your individual life experience… there is a very large point being missed here.

Children are especially targeted; establish brand loyalty early and you gain a customer for life. And there is no such thing as too young; in 1998 marketers started targeting one-year-olds. An executive for the media giant Time Warner conceded that this was “vaguely evil,” but business is business.
